Glossary of Get Printed! Terms

Above the fold:
In print refers to the upper half of the front page of a newspaper. In web publishing it refers to the section of a web page that is visible without scrolling.

Access control list
A database that holds the names of the valid system users and notes the level of access that each has been granted on the network.

Accordion fold
Also known as z-fold, a binding term for two or more parallel folds that open like an accordion. Flyers, brochures and maps often use accordion folds.

Back margin
A term referring to the margin which lies closest to the back of the book.

backlight
The illumination of a subject or object (e.g. a picture or poster) from behind.

Bleed
When any image or element on a page touches the edge of the page, leaving no margin it is said to bleed. It may bleed or extend off one or more sides. Due to small shifts in print and trimming, if the recommended bleed allowance (typically 3mm) is not adhered to trimmed items may have unwanted white edges.

Borders
A line or design used placed around the outer edge of a page or content block.

CMYK
Represents the 4 colours available on digital presses. C = Cyan, M = Magenta, Y = Yellow, K = Black

Double sided
Print applied to both sides of a sheet of paper.

Margins
The space between the edge of the page and any content that must not be trimmed off in the final document. For most products, we recommend not placing critical objects closer than 5mm from any trim line.

RGB
The 3 colours used to represent colours on screen. R = Red, G = Green, B = Blue.

Rich Black
A mixture of black with cyan, magenta and yellow ideal for use with solid black blocks in printed items. For solid black areas, useBlack 100%, Cyan 50%, Magenta 10%, Yellow 10%. For text use 100% Black only (0% cyan, magenta and yellow).

Watermark: A distinctive design created so that the parts of the image it covers appear lighter or darker than the rest of the image. Watermarks are often used to assert ownership or copyright management information.
